Sport and Exercise Medicine Physicians are specialist medical doctors who have completed an intensive four-year training program through the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP) — one of the world’s leading SEM colleges, known for its high clinical standards and strong research foundations.
They are experts in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries and medical conditions related to physical activity. Their holistic, non-surgical approach focuses on relieving pain, restoring function and enhancing long-term recovery and performance — whether treating elite athletes or everyday individuals.
As medical knowledge has evolved, doctors have increasingly specialised — and the traditional model of a generalist treating all conditions has shifted. The ACSEP was established in 1985 to fill a gap not covered by other specialties, and in 2007, Sport and Exercise Medicine was formally recognised by the federal government as an official medical specialty.
SEM Physicians manage a broad range of conditions — from acute sporting injuries and complex musculoskeletal problems to chronic pain and performance-limiting medical issues. They are also strong advocates for the role of physical activity not only in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease, but in promoting lifelong health and wellbeing.
