Rehab Advice

Providing tailored rehabilitation guidance

Rehabilitation is a critical component of recovery from musculoskeletal injuries, surgeries, and chronic conditions. A well-structured rehab plan helps restore strength, flexibility, and function while reducing the risk of re-injury. Our doctors provide tailored rehabilitation guidance to ensure optimal recovery and long-term health.

When is Rehabilitation Needed?

Rehabilitation is recommended for individuals recovering from:

  • Acute Injuries (e.g., sprains, strains, fractures, ligament injuries)
  • Chronic Conditions (e.g., osteoarthritis, tendinopathies), joint instability)
  • Post-Surgical Recovery (e.g., ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, joint replacements)
  • Overuse Injuries (e.g., stress fractures, tendinopathies, bursitis)
  • Neuromuscular Conditions (e.g., sciatica, nerve entrapments, postural dysfunction)

Key Components of Rehabilitation

Initial Assessment & Diagnosis

  • Identifying the underlying cause of pain or dysfunction.
  • (Evaluating range of motion, muscle strength, and joint stability.)
  • Biomechanical assessment (including assessment of equipment where relevant) to determine whether the patient has any modifiable risk factors for injury development or persistence which can be specifically targeted during the rehabilitation process.

Pain Management Strategies

  • Activity modification – load reduction (s in activity to reduce strain).
  • Use of modalities such as bracing, splinting, or therapeutic exercises.
  • Medications, injections, or psychological interventions for both acute and chronic pain management. Medication or injections if necessary for pain relief.

Strength & Conditioning Exercises

  • Progressive resistance training to rebuild strength safely.
  • Aim to address areas of strength deficit and/or develop compensatory mechanisms to improve muscle support around joints.
  • Safe transition back to sport/work with addition of sport-specific drills and/or work-specific functional tasks

Mobility & Flexibility Training

  • Stretching techniques to prevent stiffness and improve movement.
  • Joint mobilization exercises to enhance flexibility and prevent dysfunction.

Neuromuscular Re-Education

  • Balance and proprioception training for injury prevention.
  • Coordination exercises to restore normal movement patterns.

Gradual Return to Activity

  • Activity modification plans to ensure a safe return to daily routines or sports.
  • Sport-specific training programs to optimize performance and prevent recurrence.
  • Regular monitoring to assess progress and make necessary adjustments.

OUR APPROACH

1

ASSESSMENT

Identifying specific rehab needs based on diagnosis, patient-specific biomechanical risk factor assessment and patient goals.

2

PLANNING

Working closely with physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, and other specialists to implement the best rehabilitation strategy.

3

MONITORING

Providing guidance throughout the rehabilitation process with adjustments as needed.

4

PREVENTION

Teaching patients techniques to avoid re-injury and maintain long-term musculoskeletal health.
