Hyaluronic acid (HA) injections, also known as viscosupplementation, involve the ultrasound-guided delivery of a gel-like substance that mimics the joint’s natural lubricant — synovial fluid. This procedure can be thought of as an “oil and grease change” for osteoarthritic joints, helping to restore lubrication, reduce friction, and support smoother joint movement.
While the exact mechanism isn’t fully understood, HA injections have been shown to improve pain, mobility, and quality of life for many patients, with benefits typically lasting between 6 and 12 months.
Joint replacement is often seen as the only solution for osteoarthritis (OA) pain — but it’s not always appropriate or necessary. Hyaluronic acid (HA) injections offer a minimally invasive alternative, providing long-lasting relief for many patients.
These injections are typically used to reduce joint symptoms in patients who are not ready or suitable for surgery. In addition to improving pain and mobility, HA may also help delay disease progression — making it a valuable option for those looking to stay active for longer.
Patients who may benefit from HA injections include:
Individuals who have not responded to other treatments
Adults under 65 years of age
Those unable or unwilling to undergo joint replacement (for medical or personal reasons)
Military Veterans: HA may be DVA-funded (Gold Card, White Card with a covered condition, or with a PAMT)
ASSESSMENT
Our doctors conduct a detailed evaluation to determine whether HA is appropriate for your joint pain and goals.
PREPARATION
The skin is cleaned and local anaesthetic is applied for comfort before the procedure begins.
ULTRASOUND
Using real-time ultrasound, the HA is precisely injected into the joint for accurate placement and effectiveness.
PLAN
You’ll rest the joint for 48 hours, then resume rehabilitation as advised to optimise outcomes.
MONITORING
Pain relief builds gradually over 6–8 weeks, lasting 6–12 months. Top-up injections can be scheduled when symptoms return.
