What is a Sports and Exercise Medicine Specialist?

A Sport and exercise medicine physician is a doctor who has completed their medical training through the traditional hospital system and then branched out to specialise in the field of Sports and Exercise medicine by completing a specialty training program through the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP). The training program is comprehensive and takes at least 4 years or longer to complete.

As medical knowledge continues to expand, doctors are increasingly branching out into specialised fields of medicine. The traditional role of the family doctor as a doctor for all conditions is no longer the norm. The ACSEP was formed (in 1985) to fill a niche that was not covered by other medical specialties.

Though it took a long time to be officially recognised as a medical specialty in its own right, sports medicine was officially recognised by the federal government as a medical specialty in 2007. Sports physicians treat a range of conditions from sports injuries and medical problems related to or affecting sports performance, to non-sporting musculoskeletal problems and chronic pain. Sports physicians are also well positioned to promote health and wellbeing in the community and help people improve their quality of life by promoting physical activity.
